Crew SC’s “For Columbus” uniforms remain notorious

The Columbus Crew SC “For Columbus” jerseys are still making headlines. The influential Uni-Watch blog lead off its weekend coverage asking a question on the worst unis of the 2010s. Phil Hecken posed the question to the blog’s readership, but his photo choice pointed to the now infamous Crew SC’s white over blue uniforms from 2016.

The 2016 season was forgettable on the field for many reasons, but it’s unlikely any Crew SC fan will forget a combo that turned convention on its head in an effort to connect with the city. While many in the fan base, and uniform fashionistas, panned the combo, the shirt was the fourth best selling in MLS according to owner Anthony Precourt in his August appearance on the Massive Report Podcast.

The bold choice may have produced mixed results, but there’s a good chance it’s destined to become a retro classic as the negative reactions soften and they are wrapped in the gauzy glow of nostalgia, perhaps it will be a throwback in a league that is still building its history.

Crew SC has stated that the “For Columbus” kit is a one year special set and the all gold uniforms will once again grace MAPFRE Stadium on a regular basis. The sets will be released early next year.
