Last time you saw Columbus Crew SC play, the team walked off the field 2-1 winners over the Colorado Rapids in Denver. Kei Kamara helped bring Columbus from a halftime deficit to a victory for only the second time this season.
Before that, Crew SC had been stumbling a bit. The Black & Gold came into the match after a 5-2 loss at the hand of Orlando City SC, one of the worst losses on the season. The week prior to that, Columbus gave up a second half 3-0 lead and ended with a 3-3 tie against Toronto FC.
Crew SC currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference seven points ahead of Wednesday's opponent, New York City FC.
City is in the eighth spot in the East after an up and down season. Entering the match, New York City is 2-2 in its last four matches, with a 3-1 win over East leaders D.C. United last week, but losses to the New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact before that.
The men in sky blue are led in scoring by David Villa. The former Barcelona man has 14 goals on the season, three behind league-leading Crew SC scorer Kei Kamara. On the assist side of things, midfielder Kwadwo Poku has seven on the year, including two game-winning helpers.
NYCFC was recently helped out by the additions of Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard. Both players are World Cup and European soccer veterans and although they are still getting adjusted to life in MLS, should have a major impact as the season progresses.
Lampard may miss this game due to injury, but it is expected that both Villa and Pirlo will play.
Here is everything you need to know for the game, followed by how to watch. Let us know what you think of the game in the comment section below.
- This is the first ever meeting between these two sides. The two clubs will play again in a week and a half on August 29
- Not only is Villa third behind Kamara and Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco in goals, he also ranks behind the two in shots on the season. Villa has fired 96 shots, while Giovinco and Kamara have 126 and 107 respectively.
