It's been a tale of two teams so far this season for Columbus Crew SC and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The Black and Gold began the season with two dominating performances followed by a letdown in the team's last match against the New York Red Bulls.
After a disappointing result and performance in the season opener, Vancouver found ways to win the next three games. Last Saturday, the Whitecaps defeated the LA Galaxy, the defending MLS Cup champions, 2-0 in the best game of the season for the club.
Columbus head coach Gregg Berhalter has yet to have his first choice side for a game this season. Winger Justin Meram was suspended for the opener after receiving a red card in the final game of the playoffs a year ago. The MLS disciplinary committee decided to suspend Tony Tchani for Crew SC's second game of the year for a dangerous tackle in the first game. Most recently, Berhalter was without Meram, left back Waylon Francis (both away with their respective national teams), and Wil Trapp, injury.
Berhalter will have to shuffle things again in this match, as playmaker Federico Higuain was shown his second yellow card for dissent late in the loss to the Red Bulls. He will have to be replaced - as much as one of the league's best players can be - in the lineup. Berhalter may also be without Trapp and Francis who are both listed as questionable for the match.
Vancouver has a couple injury issues for head coach Carl Robinson to deal with as well. Midfielders Mauro Rosales and Gershon Koffie are both on the injury report this week. Both players have two starts on the season.
Crew SC striker Kei Kamara may have only scored one goal on the year, but he's been ever present on Twitter. He did not disappoint fans of the Black and Gold this week, as he looked to get them excited for Wednesday's game, despite the late start time locally.
The Black and Gold will need to leave it all on the pitch to slow down the red hot Whitecaps. Berhalter said they will not have the New England game in the back of their minds, but try and get three points and in this one before shifting gears.
Can they get the job done in the Pacific Northwest? We'll find out tonight at 10:00.
