All the long years of waiting ended today as Columbus Crew SC announced that Spanish insurance giant MAPFRE will be the naming rights partner for the stadium. The facility will now be known as MAPFRE Stadium.
Conversations started several months ago between Crew SC and MAPFRE on sponsorship options. New Director of Business Operations Andy Loughnane expanded the conversation to include stadium naming rights. The deal is the largest in team history and is a multiyear partnership.
MAPFRE is a worldwide insurance conglomerate and has been aggressively pushing into U.S. markets in the past decade, especially since the purchase of Massachusetts based Commerce Insurance in 2008. Their U.S. headquarters is in Webster, MA and they have offices around the world, including the United States. The group also owns American Commerce Insurance Company, based in Columbus and started in 1946
MAPFRE America CEO Jaime Tamayo noted these ties to the Columbus community and noted that this will allow his company into new regions with a look to a nationwide presence, a key goal for the company.
Loughnane underscored the financial benefits will continue to be felt on and off the field. The deal presents a great opportunity for MAPFRE and the team will continue to invest to improve the club on and off the field.
A press release also noted that MAPFRE will be the official Auto, Life and Home Insurance sponsor and the presenting sponsor of Give Forward, the recently renamed community program.
