Crew Ryan Finley didn't make the trip to Charlotte with the Dayton Dutch Lions on Friday. It originally was unclear if he was injured or there were other reasons that he was withheld. Now it appears according to several reports that Finley was a healthy scratch and the Dayton coaching staff removed him from the lineup due to poor practice habits.
At the beginning of his loan spell, Finley repeatedly claimed to Columbus and Dayton media that he was looking forward to the chance to get consistent game action. Crew Head Coach Gregg Berhalter saw Finley getting the chance to hone his finishing skills much like Dom Dwyer did with Orlando City last year.
Finley's loan is unclear, but the 2nd year man has been dogged by rumored attitude problems dating back to his college career. He was suspended for a couple of games while at Duke his sophomore year and immediately transferred to Notre Dame for his junior and senior years.
Finley played 64 minutes in the Dutch Lions season opener, a 3-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls reserve team. Fellow Crew loanee forward Aaron Schoenfeld replaced him in the starting lineup. The Dayton coaching staff told Reckless Challenge that Schoenfeld would be staying with the team beyond his weekend loan, further putting doubt in Ryan Finley's spot in the Dutch Lions lineup.
