Ranking the Fantasy MLS

Jumping into the fantasy rankings, where do the Crew stand?

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Fantasy sports continue to grow in popularity every year and MLS is no exception. It is a great way to get to know players, teams and the league in general. For those not familiar with how MLS fantasy soccer works here is a brief overview. You are allotted $120 million dollars and you selected a squad of players from all of the players currently in the League. Each player is assigned a dollar value based on his predicted fantasy scoring output. There are many different categories, and a player can score positive or negative points throughout the game which, is how a player's value is determined. Each player's dollar value can change throughout the season based upon on their fantasy scoring output.

I decided to take a different approach to fantasy soccer, and see what it might tell us about the actual talent on each MLS roster. In theory, teams with more real life talent should have players worth more in fantasy dollars. While this is not an exact comparison, it will give us a general idea of how each team stacks up against each other heading into the season.

Even though Major League Soccer does not believe in a single table here is a table of all 19 teams ranking them by average fantasy dollar per player.

(*Roster on MLSsoccer.com as of 3/2/14**Teams over the 30 man roster limit had their lowest dollar value player removed to reach the 30 man roster limit*)

Thankfully using this ranking method has no serious insight into the quality of the teams, but nonetheless, it is still interesting to look at. We will revisit the Team Fantasy Rankings later on in the season to see the changes based on player's on the field success.

Surprised that the folks over at MLSsoccer.com are sleeping on the Crew? Leave a comment below and tell me why they are wrong.
