After selecting Jairo Arrieta in the sixth round of the MLS Expansion Draft, Orlando City SC took Columbus Crew SC defender Eric Gehrig with their tenth and final pick.
Gehrig was signed by Crew SC as a Discovery Signing in February of 2011 after going undrafted. He spent four years at Loyola University Chicago where he scored 10 goals and 10 assists as a central midfielder.
In his first year in Columbus, Gehrig appeared in just eight games, starting four. He improved on his numbers in his second year starting eight games and making 12 appearances as a central defender for the Black and Gold, while also recording his first professional assist. That year he captained Crew SC to it's second-straight Reserve League title.
2013 saw Gehrig only appear six times for the Black and Gold, all of them starts, as he dealt with nagging injuries on and off throughout the campaign.
With the changes made by Crew SC before 2014, Gehrig had a fresh start heading into the new season. He made 20 appearances and 14 starts, splitting playing time between center back and right back. He also made his MLS Playoff debut, starting in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New England Revolution.
Crew SC lose a young and developing defender in Gehrig. It was apparent in 2014 that Gehrig was coming into his own and was willing to do whatever necessary to get on the field. He will be a good addition for Orlando, bringing MLS experience and leadership to the expansion side.
Update: It is being reported that Gehrig has been traded to the Chicago Fire. The move will take him back to where he played college and back home as Gehrig is a native of Harvey, Illinois near Chicago.
Stay tuned for more updates on the move.
