The Columbus Crew's forward/attacking midfielder Federico Higuain and left back Waylon Francis are both candidates for the 2014 MLS Latin Player of the Year.
Higuain was the maestro of the Crew's attack throughout the year creating chances for his team week in and week out. He finished with 11 goals and seven assists in 29 games played (28 starts). Although his stats were down from last year, 11 goals and nine assists, the Argentinian was a vital part of the transition to first-year head coach Gregg Berhalter's possession-based system.
Francis finished his first year with Columbus with six assists - his first coming to Higuain - in 24 appearances. The defender missed time over the summer as he was a member of the Costa Rican national team that made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Berhalter asks a lot of his outside defenders, expecting them to provide the width on the pitch by getting forward early and often, and Francis fit the bill from day one.
The voting process is in the second round and both players are still alive. Higuain is up against Chivas USA's Erick Torres, while Francis is matched up with Real Salt Lake's Joao Plata. You can vote for both Crew players here to help them advance to the next round.
