The Columbus Crew's Steve Clark has quietly worked his way up the goalkeeping ranks in MLS. In his first season back in the United States, Clark is ranked in the top five in shutouts, saves, and goals against average in MLS, yet appeared to be doing his job rather quietly.
Now the "Yes!" man is getting noticed around the league for his performances. This week Clark is up for MLS Save of the Week with two separate saves from the Crew's 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact. The first came in the 61st minute when Clark tipped a Calum Mallace half volley from long range over the crossbar. He followed that up with a diving penalty kick save in second half stoppage time to preserve the shutout for the Black and Gold.
Not only is Clark being recognized for his saves, but his overall play as he is nominated for Player of the Month for September. The goalkeeper made three shutouts in four games over the month, making save after save to help the Crew in a tight Eastern Conference playoff race. He showed what head coach Gregg Berhalter saw in him when he brought Clark here in the offseason, with his leadership and ability to fit into the team's style of play.
