The Columbus Crew announced today that defenders Ginacarlo Gonzalez and Waylon Francis have been called up to the Costa Rica National Team. Costa Rica will play a home friendly against Paraguay on Wednesday, March 5.
After the game, both players will return to the Crew before their season-opening match on March 8 at D.C. United.
Gonzalez, who signed with Columbus last week, records his first call-up as a member of the Crew. The center back has 31 caps with Costa Rica, including a member of the defense that helped the nation qualify for the 2014 World Cup Finals.
Gonzalez made his debut for Los Ticos on October 9, 2010 and his last appearance was in a 2-1 over Mexico on October 16, 2013.
Francis also earns his first call-up as a member of the Black and Gold after joining in November. The 23-year old left back has one previous cap for Costa Rica, a 2-0 win over Nicaragua in the group stage of the Copa Centroamerica.
Both players will be hoping to impress head coach Jorge Luis Pinto ahead of the World Cup Finals. Gonzalez seems to be a lock to make the team headed to Brazil, but Francis has work to do in order to be a part of the 23-man roster.
This is the only scheduled friendly for Costa Rica before the World Cup Finals.
Los Ticos are in Group D along with Uruguay, England, and Italy and begin group play June 14 against Uruguay.
