I have been following the online discussions surrounding the "OG" and "NG" with some amusement. As an outsider (read as fan that sits somewhere other than Nordecke) I submit my views with the understanding that I might become the new target for your ire.
Stop your childish squabbling and remember what the ultimate reason should be for coming to Crew Stadium; to support the boys on the field. Come for the dollar swill (I mean beer) or brat, but come back for the team. If you are coming solely for an event, don’t get upset if the people around you are screaming, chanting and singing in support of the boys on the field. If you are newer to the Crew you should want to learn the history of the team because there is a lot that happened before the MLS Cup in 2008. Those of you that have a few more seasons under your belts should embrace the newer fans because growing the support (numerically and financially) helps show the city, league and potential free agents that Columbus is a growing vibrant football (soccer for you newbies) community. Isn’t that the real goal?
I understand that pride can play into this conversation but let’s remember one of the latest FO gaffes and not repeat the mistake. We should not be attempting to gauge, measure or quantify our fandom. Wearing team apparel, carrying a scarf, lofting a 2-stick or other type of tifo makes you as much a fan as wearing surgical scrubs makes you a doctor (although a box tie might help). The location of your seat, whether you are in the front of the Nordecke, back of the Nordecke, or elsewhere in the stadium no more defines your fandom than the clothes you wear on gameday. Your passion and commitment for the players and team is what should define you.
Lastly I ask you to remember this as well, there are thousands of other fans in the stadium every game day that bleed black and gold. Some of us are members of various supporters group, not because it is the cool thing to do, but because it is another way to show support for the team. There are families in the Club section and around the players’ tunnel that have been going to games longer than many in the Nordecke. By not including those long time fans in your discussion denigrates part of the history of the team. The Crew need all of their fans, not just the Nordecke, if they are to surpass "Goal 10K".
