The Crew added three more players today during this afternoon's Supplemental Draft. The team looked to fill a couple holes in the roster by adding defender Reed Matte from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, goalkeeper Daniel Withrow of Marshall and High Point University outside midfielder Shawn Sloan.
Matte didn't rate on Top Drawer Soccer's top 100 prospects list coming out of UAB, but was listed as MLS Soccer's Simon Borg as the top right back coming out of the college ranks. He has experience with the Portland Timbers U-23 team which raised his profile.
Known for his attacking play, Matte will require more seasoning before he's able to make an impact at the pro level. He will likely be the understudy on the right side behind Josh Williams. He will also probably provide depth at the other outside back positions.
Withrow came out of Marshall as the all time shutout leader and the first player in school history to win Conference Player of the Year honors which he shared. Seen as an outside pro prospect, he raised his profile with his POY award. The Crew are also familiar with Marshall, getting to see them in 2012 in an early season friendly.
With Andy Gruenebaum and Matt Lampson set as the first and second string at goalkeeper, Withrow will battle it out for the third spot goalkeeper spot on the roster. The Crew are bringing in other trialists to push Withrow so his spot isn't assured.
Sloan caught the coaching staff's eye during recent Big South Conference playoffs according to Brian Bliss. He showed some of the traits the team was looking for in a role player and the team is giving him a shot at making the squad.
The Crew drafted out a position of need and passed by some interesting players. Perhaps Matte has the qualities to be steal in the draft, but it doesn't appear that any of the players will make an immediate impact on the team. They will provide some very valuable depth though.
